What are the major components of a diesel engine?
- Engine Block: The main structure of the engine, where the cylinders and other internal components are housed.
- Cylinders: Hollow chambers within the engine block where the combustion process takes place. While the number of cylinders can vary, common configuration includes inline-4, inline-6, V6, and V8.
- Cylinder Heads: Form the top of an engine;s combustion chamber and house essential components like intake and exhaust valves and fuel injectors. Intake valves allow air to enter the combustion chamber as the fuel injector injects fuel to create combustion. Exhaust valves let out the burnt air after combustion, also known as exhaust.
- Connecting Rods: Using the downward motion caused by combustion in the cylinder, the connecting rod transfers energy to the crankshaft, causing it to rotate.
- Crankshaft: Converts the liner motions of pistons into the rotational motion and then transfers that motion to the transmission and, ultimately, to the wheels.
CNH Reman engine components are remanufactured using advanced engineering techniques, undergo strict quality testing and fit seamlessly into your equipment. We pride ourselves in our work and provide you peace of mind with our industry-leading 24-month parts warranty for both dealer and customer installed parts.
What can cause damage to engine components?
Due to the harsh work environments of Case IH and New Holland equipment, one of the most ciommon causes of engine failures are contaminants such as dirt and dust through the air intake or poor-quality oil, increasing wear. Proper lubrication is essential to the longevity of an engine. Low or burnt oil can lead to increased friction between components, causing premature wear and can lead to failure. Using the wrong viscosity or incorrect additives in oil reduces lubrication and also, in turn, harms the engine. Engine components can warp and potentially lock up due to overheating, usually caused by a lack of coolant, faulty water pumps, or a malfunctioning thermostat. Locking up can also occur when water enters the combustion chamber. Since water isn’t combustible, it can prevent the piston from moving, causing connecting rods to bend and damage to other components.
Can contaminated fuel cause damage to engines?
Yes, dirty fuel can cause many issues within an engine, such as increased wear, decreased engine performance, and potential engine failure. Below are 5 failures in an engine caused by dirty fuel.
- Fuel Injector malfunction due to deposits forming on the injector nozzles. This can cause fuel to not be dispensed properly, resulting in incomplete combustion.
- Clogged fuel filters restrict fuel flow, resulting in poor engine performance and straining on the fuel pump.
- Increased wear in the engine is caused by contaminations acting as abrasives, reducing engine performance and significant engine damage.
- Corrosion causing leaks in fuel system components can be caused by water and other contaminants.
- Microbial growth can produce acidic by-products and sludge that can damage or clog engine components, reducing engine efficiencies.
Ensuring the use of clean fuel is essential to the longevity and efficiency of your engine. For more information check our our blog on contaminated fuel.
