What is an AC Compressor, and where is it located?

An AC compressor is a mechanical device generally mounted near the belt driving the compressor pulley on the front of the engine. The unit compresses and circulates the refrigerant through the AC system by drawing low-pressure refrigerant gas from the evaporator and compressing it to high-pressure, producing hot refrigerant gas. In the condenser, hot, pressurized refrigerant is cooled, and heat is released to the outside environment. Cool air is provided to the cabin or operator's compartment as the refrigerant circulates through the AC system.
